The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is in discussions with Meta Platforms and Google to integrate spam complaints reported on platforms such as WhatsApp and Google’s native phone dialler with telecom operators’ complaint systems, according to a Mint report citing people familiar with the matter.

The report said the regulator has held multiple rounds of discussions with the two technology companies to create a mechanism that would connect user-reported spam complaints from WhatsApp and Google’s in-built dialler with the telecom industry’s Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform as well as TRAI’s Do Not Disturb (DND) portal.

The proposed integration is aimed at enabling telecom operators and regulators to identify repeat offenders more efficiently and take quicker action against entities involved in spam calls and messages.

According to the report, the DLT platform is currently used by telecom operators to register telemarketers and monitor commercial communications, while the DND portal allows consumers to report unsolicited commercial calls and messages.

“Discussions are actively taking place with both Meta and Google regarding spam management. TRAI wants WhatsApp to share its spam data with telecom operators for better action,” Mint quoted a person familiar with the discussions as saying. The report added that the regulator is currently pursuing the proposal through consultations with the companies.
